"We stayed over in their new rooms for the weekend to attend a wedding. Rooms are modern and spacious and the balcony looking out toward the beautiful gardens etc was a real treat. There was a wedding on sight while we were there setting was great and heard much positive feedback from other guests. We'll be back."

"Great overnight stay at the historic Fitzroy Inn in Mittagong. Luxurious big room with comfortable king size bed, cosy chairs, tea and coffee and all tastefully decorated. Continental breakfast provided in the light filled dining room. Stunning 1836 building with expansive gardens and surrounds. EV chargers a thoughtful touch. Overall a great place to stay. Very much appreciated by us and most importantly by our pooch. Yes, it’s even pet friendly!"

Stayed on the 23rd July. My wife and I along with Kelly our greyhound. Such luxury was not expected and even pet litter bags. The history of the place and passion of the owner along with such comfort will see us staying on our trips north more often.

“Beautiful historical venue, lovingly maintained with exquisite rooms. We were passing through from Melbourne to Brisbane and only wished we could have stayed for longer.”

  • James ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Sensational venue for a weekend getaway in the Southern Highlands. This spacious suite was great for a couple, and had all amenities needed. The check-in and check-out process was very easy and communication was great. We felt at home with the continental breakfast and the location was great. The Inn itself was beautifully restored and the gardens were picturesque. Highly recommend!”

  • Peita ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Beautiful old building, and really enjoyed just wandering through the old rooms and gardens and learning about the history as well. The highlight was sitting in front of a roaring open fire with a glass of wine.”

  • John ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“A beautiful old inn rich in history, which was easy to find out about with a short history walk, lots of story boards and old photo's around the place. The gardens are really pretty. The room was clean and well stocked with coffee, tea and a simple breakfast. We loved our stay and will definitely be back. Thanks to all at the Fitzroy Inn.”

“This is a great place to stay. Beautiful historic guesthouse, with large tastefully decorated and well appointed rooms looking over gardens. The staff are friendly and helpful and on top of all this, its pet friendly and reasonably priced. Our puppy enjoyed the 5 acres of gardens. We used the Inn as a base for exploring the Southern Highlands and we would definitely stay here again.”

“We stayed in the Norman Lindsay room on the bottom floor if the school masters cottage. Lovely large room and bathroom. We only met 1 staff member and she was very welcoming and helpful, and very Covid safe. We appreciated this as we were visiting my father for his 97th birthday yesterday. It was lovely to have our dog with us, and she enjoyed the gardens, although it was a constant battle to keep her our of the river and duck pond! The only negative we could find was the breakfast basket. It would have been nicer to have some local produce and perhaps some bakery goods from the local bakery. We would have been happy to pay a little extra for this.”

"A wonderful place to stay in the Southern Highlands and one of the few high-end pet friendly accommodation options as well. Firstly, the service is outstanding which always makes a booking, stay pleasant and stress-free. Carol, at reception, provided a warm and helpful service for our stay, with understanding and flexibility despite our last minute arrangements. The accommodation itself is uniquely set in a collection of historic buildings with beautiful accompanying gardens. There are some fascinating old rooms beneath the house including its own historical prison cell! The rooms themselves are old fashioned with some contemporary touches (aircon, soap dispensers, mini fridge). Note that these are not the modern rooms you would expect in the newer type of modern five star hotels - the character rooms are large and part of the wonderful design. The common breakfast dining area is open and friendly in the mornings- where you have the freedom to serve yourself a continental breakfast ranging from a bread/toast pantry, cereal pantry, fruit bowl, and an industrial standard coffee/hot chocolate machine. Reluctant to post this modest gem review (in case it gets too hard to book :) ! ) but would like to support and wish the owners all the best success as they have done a wonderful job preserving a historic part of the Southern Highlands for visitors to enjoy. Recommended!"

“Picked this place by internet search as it looked nice.

I was not disappointed. I loved the place and the manager Carol was outstanding and very helpful. I’ve read the other reviews and found a few older ones where they were not as happy as they might be for various reasons. It is not like your every day modern motel and you shouldn’t expect it to be. It is the oldest continuing inn in Australia (1836) and it has that old fashioned comfortable feeling but with mod cons like good showers, toilets etc, and beautiful grounds to wander around in and appreciate. Our group stayed in rooms 1 and 2, very large and very nicely setup. Not the chrome, tiles and paint of a modern motel but well set up with furnishings and items in good condition that come from a bygone more relaxed, peaceful and comfortable time. Everything worked ok, but as you might expect in an old house, not as many power points in places you might want them for computers, charging stations etc. Wifi worked fine. It has been mentioned that the train line is quite close and might possibly be a disturbance for light sleepers - though I had no trouble at all with that. A continental breakfast was available with all the items you might want.

The rooms a available for lounging and relaxation were lovely, as mentioned, the comfort of a bygone era. Furnishings, pictures and ornaments are in keeping with the style and ambience of the place. Of interest is a cellar with an internal well and a dungeon once used to hold prisoners being transported to the prison at Berrima. There is a large atrium and a dining room with a large stage, would be good for parties and weddings though with only three of us, I have no experience of how that would be organised.

There are some rooms not in the main Inn building which I did not see inside, and I was told there are plans to add a lot more rooms.

Rooms were clean. In the morning there were a couple of workers around doing various odd jobs so maintenance and upkeep is being done.

To those who have Electric Vehicles, there are two charging stations available in the parking lot, a Tesla one and a Porsche one, I guess very convenient for some.

As mentioned, I loved the place and if visiting the area again, would stay there again.”

“Loved this place. We looked at the Inn as a potential place for our wedding but ended up having that elsewhere. This time around friends of ours got married at Bendooleys Estate and we opted to stay here for a couple of days. It did not disappoint.

The feel of the old Inn is very homestead like and is warm and inviting. The number of open spaces and room for guests to relax in is great, certainly no lack of those. It also has several fireplaces which are ready to be lit, well stocked with firewood, matches and fire starters so even the novice can get a fire going. There is also a gas heater for those who prefer direct heat without the effort of the fireplace, but let’s be honest there is something incredibly therapeutic about lighting a fire.

We stayed in room number 5, at the front of the property just above the front room with the double fireplaces. The size of the room is impressive and the feel is warm. The bathroom is sizeable and comes well equipped with all necessities. The bed itself was fine, sturdy despite a bit of creaking. It was a comfy sleep.

The room has a pod coffee machine with several pods available for coffee making which is a nice touch. It also has an electric kettle for tea. We were provided with two little cartons of milk, which is great because most hotels never give you enough milk. We were surprised to also find we were supplier with some small cereal packets, some energy bars, two cartons of juice (apple), little packed chocolate croissants and even fresh fruit. Not things you expect in every hotel, so definitely impressed by it.

Service was excellent. The two dogs roaming the property at times are a wonderful addition and the lady who was cleaning the rooms was most attentive.

The grounds and gardens themselves are wonderful to wander through and relaxing.

Train lines are pretty close to the building, maybe about 150 metres or so on the other side of the road and a block of land, and at night the trains don’t stop, so expect some noise from that. It didn’t really bother us much and we slept fine.

There is an iron and ironing board to allow you to get ready. The ironing board lacks any padding which is odd. It would have helped the ironing process. It’s just fabric over the metal board.

We struggled to find a pen. That would have been a handy addition.

None of those things really knocked any points off though. Would still give this a 5 star rating and we’ll be back.”

“An amazing guest house in the beautiful town of Mittagong. Stayed here one night. Large room with breakfast supplied. The house is stunning and is st amongst beautiful gardens. Generous areas in the home to sit and enjoy the house and it's delightful ambience. Place is pet friendly by request. Wonderful place for a special event!”

“Stayed here for our nieces wedding.

Absolutely beautiful, relaxing atmosphere. Rooms were clean the only problem we had the beds are a bit hard (for my wife). Staff are lovely, friendly and nothing is to much trouble.

The grounds are beautiful. A very nice place to stay..food is good too.”

“What a beautiful boutique hotel. We stayed in the School Masters suite with our two fur babies and it was spacious and well laid out. King size bed was very comfy. Gardens were beautiful, and whilst taking the dogs for a stroll in the morning, we met the resident Grey Kangaroo who was very chilled and in no hurry to rush off.”

  • Thomas ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“My wife and I chose to stay at the Fitzroy Inn after a friend recommended it. It was even more than we expected. Our room was spacious, comfortable and overlooked the green lawns amongst the landscaped gardens. After strolling the historic grounds we dined at the restaurant. The crackling log fire was romantic, the food delicious and the wine superb. The next morning we were so enchanted that decided to stay another night. By all means bring your camera to snap some unforgettable photos.”

  • Terry ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

As a seasoned traveler staying in hotels often, the Fitzroy Inn is a one of a kind that delivers well beyond your expectations. Highly recommended.”

“Attended a friend's 50th birthday party. Lunch for 30 was catered with style. Grounds were immaculate. On site parking with standard electric and Tesla recharge stations available. Property is full of history and there's a history walk as well. Well worth a visit. Can't comment on the lodgings as we didn't stay overnight.”

  • Karen ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“Great place to stay, historic house. There are guided tours around the property or you can do a DIY tour with a map and room descriptions.

You have access to all parts of the property, the room I stayed in was just lovely, king size comfy bed and pillows, spotlessly clean and a great claw foot bath.”

  • David ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The best place to stay in the Southern Highlands. Historical and a little bit whimsical, it's not 'large hotel' and that's the point. More like staying at the Grand house of an eccentric wealthy uncle. Pool table, hidden rooms, 'haunted cellar', 'bridge of sighs', dog friendly. Great party venue.”

  • Meghann ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“The Fitzroy is both an amazing historical building and a beautiful and relaxing place to stay. The rooms were spacious and comfortable, the staff friedly and welcoming, and the gardens too devine, and the old cells in the basement absolutely incredible. If you love history it's an absolute must.”

  • Scott ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

“A perfect stopover for a long trip north or south on the Hume. Beautiful gardens and the pet friendly hospitality was a life saver. Be sure to get some Paste Thai takeaway and a cheeky bottle of Artemis wine and dine on the veranda of the Fitzroy Inn. Bliss!!!!”

  • Amy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
